Still Read Magazines?

Magazines

As a blogger and gal working full-time in the digital world, I find it a bit ironic that I’m single-handedly keeping the postal system in business. I subscribe to 6 (yes 6!) women’s magazines. Helloooo snail mail!

With the emergence of so many awesome style blogs (ahem), I’m curious if Style Me Thrifty readers still pick up style tips from printed publications.

I clearly do. In fact, over the holidays, I either received or gifted myself a subscription to Lucky, Glamour, and Real Simple. And I’m already a reader of Vogue, Cosmo, and People… albeit a little embarrassed to admit 2 of those! Sure, I love surfing the web and getting inspiration from fellow bloggers, but I also love laying on the couch with a glossy mag on my lap. Dogearing pages is so satisfying. Plus, magazines offer amazing deals for 1- or 2-year subscriptions, so I also feel pretty thrifty! $1 an issue? Yes, please.

So I’m wondering… am I alone here? Do you still read any fashion mags? If so, which ones? OR do you consider them a thing of the past? (a la acid wash jeans?).

Please share in the comments below!

Oooh– good question! Does Real Simple count? It’s full of not only recipes and organization techniques, but also style tips. My interest piqued when I realized I could read magazines on my Kindle. It’s the same price for a subscription, and most magazines still send the paper copies to you– but it’s fun to flip through a digital magazine when you’re taking a break from reading a book.

So cool! I didn’t know you could read them on a Kindle. That’s pretty convenient! Thanks for sharing!

My mom gave me Real Simple for Christmas. Cannot WAIT for it to arrive :)

Paper, please — as a conservationist I hate to feel this way, but books, newspapers and magazines are 10x more satisfying to me. At least they can be shared and recycled.

I hear ya, Judy. I’m always conflicted, but I bring my old mags to our “free” table at work to recycle them that way. Go TNC!

A fellow “blogger” I do too still enjoy a good old fashioned magazine… turning and flipping pages have made many an inspiration board!! I’ve also been able to pull many gifts for others and myself from items recommended!! Okay, here we go – InStyle, US Weekly, Lucky, In Touch, Star (I’ve gone there!), Glamour… the list goes on and on… I’m also lucky enough that my company manages Hearst so I get to see Cosmo, Marie Claire, Elle, Redbook (yes, I’ve reached that dreaded age) and many more hot off the presses!! Inspiration comes in many shapes and sizes and interestingly enough… still love me the act of sitting with a good mag!!

Marianne, I totally agree! And thank you for confessing your love of gossip magazines. I’m right there with ya :)

If I could buy just one magazine (I am thrifty, too), what would you recommend? I’m turning 30 this year and know I need to rethink my post-college fashion!

Don’t make me choose! Okay, if I had to pick one, my recco would be Lucky. I love everything about that mag. The style advice is awesome, the photos are gorgeous — and they do a nice job of mixing pieces at all different price ranges.

I actually “read” very little of the magazine, but I have 2 subscriptions and love to flip through the photos :)
