Colored Tights Outfit Decoded

Style Me Thrifty in green tights

I posted the above photo of my colored tights to Style Me Thrifty’s Facebook page this morning and have been inundated with questions about the origin of the items I’m wearing (I have such nosy friends and family!). ;-)

For all you curious ladies, see below. I also wanted to take a sec and explain why this photo is um, missing a torso and head. The truth is: the main goal of my blog is to help my readers lead more stylish lives on a budget — NOT to promote how fashionable I am on a daily basis (trust me, I average at least one frumpy outfit a week!). I share occasional photos of myself as examples of how to to style pieces. And well, I chop off my head because I want you to picture yourself in that item — not me (and my big forehead)! In fact, the first thing I always tell my photographer/bf is, “Don’t get my face in it!” Hence the headless photos.

So I’d like to dedicate this blog post to all those days you feel frumpy! Cheers!

*Tip* – Before you go shopping, check your closet for any navy items you already own. It’s the perfect color combo for green tights (or really, any color!).

How to Wear Colored Tights

How to wear colored tights

Now that the weather is chillier, I’ve been noticing a lot of ladies wearing one of winter’s favorite accessories: tights! Say goodbye to matronly nude pantyhose and hellooo to showing a little colored leg.

In theory, I love the colored tight trend. A pop of color adds playfulness to a otherwise drab outfit, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t the tiniest bit intimidated by this bold trend. Looking down and seeing my gams wrapped up in bright cobalt tights is… well, a lot to take in. So how does a normal gal (ie, not a celeb!) make colored tights look effortless and suitable for everyday wear?

Watch and learn, ladies. I’ve found plenty of examples over on Pinterest for inspiration.

Winter Wedding Outfit

19 Nov

Reader Question: I’m attending a wedding this month in Chicago. What the heck does one wear to a winter wedding?!

Style Me Thrifty: Winter weddings can be romantic, cozy, and well, freezing cold. Here are a few easy tips keep in mind when putting together a winter-friendly outfit for a wedding.

  • Pick a dress in a rich color like burgundy, eggplant, or peacock blue. These colors are great for cold months and look lovely with non-tanned skin.
  • Stay warm in your cocktail dress by adding tights. I especially love textured tights – they add personality!
  • When in doubt, a little black dress is a solid choice but spice it up with colorful heels or jewelry.
  • Pack layers — a pashmina for when you’re indoors and peacoat and gloves for the trip home.

Sidenote: I’ve started using Polyvore, an interactive site that let’s you assemble outfits and links directly to the retailers that sell the items. I’m still learning the ropes (which is why some of you got an email saying the outfit was posted, oops!) but I think it’ll be fun. Let me know what you think.
