Bloggers Do it Better: Red

14 Feb

Quick: how many pieces of RED clothing do you own? If you’re like me, the answer is not many. I counted 4 red items in my wardrobe: a cardi, blouse, tank top, and pair of Christmas socks.

I’d say it’s about time to add this bold color to my life! One of my favorite fashion blogs, Pretty Shiny Sparkly, is hosting a challenge to help with just that. She’s asked bloggers to show how real girls wear real trends in her column called “Bloggers Do It Better.” Today’s assignment is simple: show us how you wear red!

Since I shared a few red-hot Valentine’s Day outfit ideas with you all a few weeks ago (here, here, and here), I figured it was only fair to reveal my own red Vday outfit. Here’s what I wore to dinner with my sweetie on Sunday night. Happy Valentine’s Day!

And because bloggers really DO do it better, here are a few other red-inspired outfits from six fellow bloggers. This is also my sneaky way of sharing my fav fashion blogs with you all (seriously, check them out). Looking good, ladies!

Adora-bauble Necklaces

8 Jan

[bau-ble: A small, showy trinket or decoration]

I’m currently coveting bold, adora-bauble necklaces. Get it? Adorable + bauble! Let me explain.

Picture a necklace that has a bold embellishment on it — maybe a chunky cluster of beads or a row of sparkly gems — and you have yourself a bauble necklace. It’s a necklace that is meant to be seen. A statement-maker.

Check out some of my current favorite, all under $50, and then challenge yourself to use the word “bauble” in a sentence today. So fun!

Bauble necklaces from Modcloth

Modcloth Pearls of Widsom for $20.99; Modcloth Tidal Crave Necklace for $34.99.

Adora-bauble necklaces

Etsy Teal Cluster Necklace for $50; Etsy Flower & Pearl Necklace for $44; Charlotte Russe Bead Cluster Collar Necklace for $12.50; Kohl’s Simply Vera Wang Jet Simulated Pearl Necklace for $21.

LOFT and Anthropologie necklaces

LOFT Long Fireball Cluster Necklace for $34.99 and Anthropologie Loose Change Necklace for $48.

Limited Stamp Feathers Necklace

The Limited Stamped Feathers Necklace for $36.90.

Infinity scarves

I never thought I’d be quoting Toy Story on this blog, but my recent obsession with infinity scarves means Buzz Lightyear quotes have been replaying in my head. Over and over. Infinity scarves are everywhere!

Scarves are definitely a chic and cozy accessory, especially during these cold months, and retailers are now pushing infinity — also known as loop or circle — scarves. Guess what? I’m buying! This trend is super easy to wear: just wrap the circular scarf once or twice around your neck. I recommend picking up a chunky, cable knit infinity for lazy days and a soft, printed scarf for work. Wrap, smile and go!

A few favorites:

Chain link scarf from Nasty Gal

Chunk knit strip infinity loop scarf from LOFT

Wildflower scarf from Urban Outfitters

Ribbex lurex infinity loop scarf from LOFT

Cotton jersey loop scarf from Etsy

Collection XIIX Scarf, Basket Weave Inifity Scarf from Macy's

Where to shop (top to bottom): Pink infinity from Affordablescarves.com ($13.56) // Zebra from Affordablescarves.com ($7.96) // Chain link from Nasty Gal ($18) // Chunky knit from LOFT ($39.50) // Wildflowers from Urban Outfitters ($24) // Grey loop from LOFT ($34.50) // Cotton jersey from Etsy ($33.60) // Basket weave from Macy’s ($27.99).

Colored Tights Outfit Decoded

14 Dec

Style Me Thrifty in green tights

I posted the above photo of my colored tights to Style Me Thrifty’s Facebook page this morning and have been inundated with questions about the origin of the items I’m wearing (I have such nosy friends and family!). ;-)

For all you curious ladies, see below. I also wanted to take a sec and explain why this photo is um, missing a torso and head. The truth is: the main goal of my blog is to help my readers lead more stylish lives on a budget — NOT to promote how fashionable I am on a daily basis (trust me, I average at least one frumpy outfit a week!). I share occasional photos of myself as examples of how to to style pieces. And well, I chop off my head because I want you to picture yourself in that item — not me (and my big forehead)! In fact, the first thing I always tell my photographer/bf is, “Don’t get my face in it!” Hence the headless photos.

So I’d like to dedicate this blog post to all those days you feel frumpy! Cheers!

*Tip* – Before you go shopping, check your closet for any navy items you already own. It’s the perfect color combo for green tights (or really, any color!).

LOFT Georgetown Grand Opening

LOFT Georgetown

A Saturday in Georgetown goes a little something like this:

Nice weather  + shopping + tourists = mass hysteria!

Perhaps a sane person would learn this formula and try to avoid Georgetown on a sunny Saturday, but what can I say, I love a chaotic outdoor shopping experience.

My best friend, Robin, and I decided to head to the grand opening event of LOFT Georgetown, one of my fav thrifty stores. I’m a member of the Capital Area Fashion and Beauty Blogger group (CapFABB) and got wind that our co-founder Lacey, from A Lacey Perspective, was hosting the grand opening event. Fun, right?! (ps – how do I get thaat gig??). The store had champagne and Georgetown cupcakes on hand, and Lacey teamed up with Lucky magazine stylists to help us in the dressing room.

I picked up a really cute red blouse for 30% off. Love a pop of color during the fall and winter months. Plus, red goes with my cheapo cheetah print flats from Target perfectly!

Style Me Thrifty in LOFT

It was hard to settle on just one new piece from LOFT, so here are my favorite items from their fall collection:

LOFT Stretch Twill Jacket

LOFT Ikat Diamond Print Scarf

LOFT Flat Wool Twill Boot Skirt Greenwich Plaid

LOFT Haircalf Skinny Belt

LOFT Pleated Grosgrain Trim Cardigan

LOFT Cast Stone Bangle Set
